Lessons for Life: Charity

The Purpose: To teach that charity not only takes care of the needs of people that receive it, but warms the heart of the provider.

The Lesson

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling bell."
Bible, 1 Corinthians 13.1

So What is Charity Anyway?

For our purposes let's say it is a benevolent good well toward all mankind that is reflected in our actions toward those who are in need.

Some say that charity is the true love of God.

Did you really say that, Margaret?

Margaret Thatcher said that nobody would remember the Good Samaritan if he had not had money.

Really?

Such a silly statement!

It's true that he went out of his way to see that the man taken by robbers by paying for his care after he got the man into town.

But that is not the real story of the Good Samaritan.

Do you remember the story?

A man was taken by robbers and lay on the road near death. A Priest passed by, feared for his own life, and took a wide birth of the man. So did a Levite!

The man robbed was a Jew. The Priest was obligated to help the man, but he didn't help him.

Now the Levites were to look out for the down and out. Right? They even had cities of refuge for criminals.

Because of fear and indifference, he hurriedly passed by.

Then comes the Samaritan who has nothing to do with the Jews. He goes out of his way to help the man. He gets him into town where he is safe.

We would remember him just for that, wouldn't we?

Of course we would!

He did what the Priest or Levite should have done.

That was the point of the story. So Mrs. Thatcher isn't so smart after all.

Yes, the Samaritan's money improved the robbed man's condition, but that is not what saved the man's life.

Test Question: Which of the three, the Priest, the Levite, or the Samaritan (not counting the fact that the Samaritan had some money), had charity?

If you said, the Samaritan, give yourself a gold star.

Yes, he had a benevolent good well toward all mankind that was reflected in his actions toward those who are in need.

Just hearing the story of the Good Samaritan makes you want to do the right thing. When we see the good acts of others, it influences our actions. When we show charity, it helps others to see their potential to help others.

You don't need money to be benevolent. A charitable act does not have to require money. In fact, most of the charitable acts we see are a simple offering of time and energy.

Let's say the snow is twelve inches deep. You shovel your driveway and then help the old fellow next door shovel his. Now what did you offer? Money? No! Just some time and energy.

What are the benefits of charity?

The main benefit is to the person receiving the service, right? It may be, but there is something in benevolence that warms your soul. You did the right thing. You helped someone in need.

Yes, Charity can require money or assets.

It's hard to help starving children in Afghanistan if you live in Florida. But you can through a charity that services those children by donating money or clothing or whatever is required.

You can rush aid to disaster victims by donating to the Red Cross or the Salvation Army. Habitat for Humanity is building homes right now in the Southeast where we have so much damage. I worked on four such homes in Arizona. I gave more time than money to Habitat for Humanity. Now that I live in Idaho, I haven't worked for Habitat. But now I hear they are going to build in our little town. I'll try to be there swinging my hammer.

Your church or community might have a program that allows you to make blankets, or health kits, or teaching kits. That way, you can put your energy and time to a good cause.

Society depends on your benevolent good will.

The government can't do everything, can they? Recently, we have learned that they don't even know how! They need our know-how and help in these tough times.

Governments doesn't provide men in trucks to rush around after a snow storm to shovel the walks of widows.

They don't send the food trucks up and down city streets to feed the homeless. They don't pass out warm sleeping bags to these people. (Some won't go indoors.)

No, we should do our part.

It's true, we can't do everything, but we can do something.

We may restrict our activities to our neighborhood.

We may expand our activities to the world.

It's up to each of us to decide what our resources and limitations are.

Many wealthy persons have created foundations for charitable purposes. These foundations are very important to society.
They provide funding for charity, education, health services, museums, and a multitude of other purposes that benefit society.

Some wouldn't give a tinker's bell to a starving nun.

It's true that many who could make a difference in this world fail to give support where needed due to their own greed.

Now, Scrooge became a repentant man.

Yes, old Ebenezer Scrooge was a greedy critter that said, Send the poor to the poorhouse! That's what they are for!

Well, not exactly in those words.

He kept both hands on his purse less some poor soul needing a shilling or tuppence came by asking for help. He could use the purse to give the asker a whip across the face.

The Ghosts saved Scrooge

Scrooge saw the past, the present, and the future.

He saw his old partner, Marley, in chains!

He saw the straits of the Crockett family and Tiny Tim.

Scrooge changed his ways! Yes, he found Charity. Scrooge became a jolly old soul, tossing coins around like they were candy.
He rejoined his family and blessed the Crockett family with food and help for Tiny Tim. Why, Scrooge couldn't have been happier!

And maybe, that is the greatest thing about Charity.

It brings happiness to those who practice it.

For The Little Children

Billy was in the first grade. He lived with his four sisters and his two brothers on the poor side of town by the fair grounds. It was during the Great Depression before World War II when men could not get work to feed their families.

Billy had a loving mother who made bread every other day. She always had a big pot of beans or a pot of soup on the stove. Billy's daddy was out of work, but friends from the church made sure that the family did not go hungry. These same friends made sure that the family did not suffer from the cold. They made sure that the family had wood and coal to burn in their stoves.

Some of Billy's friends made fun of Billy because the family was poorer than their family. Some men were able to keep their jobs, but Billy's daddy ran a lumber yard and when people couldn't afford to buy lumber, the lumber yard closed. His daddy was out of work.

Billy felt sad that his daddy couldn't get work and that some of the other kids made fun of him. Then one day, a friend of Billy's named Bruce invited Billy to come home with him after school. Billy went with Bruce to his house a few blocks away from the school.

When they got to the house, Bruce said, Come on in! Bruce walked across the rickety boards of the porch and into the house. The house was dark and cold. When Bruce turned on the light in the kitchen, Billy looked down at the floor and could see dirt between the boards.

Billy said, Where is your mother and father?

Bruce said, Mother is at work. My father went away a long time ago. We don't know where he is. We think he jumped the train.

Billy knew the men that rode the train. Some called them bums or hobos. Billy often watched a hobo walk the two-and-a-half blocks from the tracks to his house. His mother always gave them bread and a plate of beans out the back door. If Father was home, he allowed the man to come in. Only one man was bad, and father sent him out the door with a stove poker.

The reason the hobos did not stop at the other houses was because they knew they would not be fed. Billy's address was written on a switch control box down by the tracks. The hobos would read the address and walk straight to Billy's house. They knew they would be fed there.

Billy felt sorry for Bruce and his mother, having no father to take care of them. Bruce opened the wood ice box. It was empty except for a metal bowl which had macaroni in it. The macaroni was as white as chalk. There was no cheese in it. Billy knew it had been cooked in water with nothing else added.

Bruce said, Do you want some macaroni?

Billy knew that there was hardly enough for Bruce. He said, No, thank you. I'm not hungry. You eat it, Bruce.

Bruce wolfed down the macaroni like he was starving. Billy thought that maybe he was, he was so skinny. Billy felt so sad that he had to leave Bruce. He said, I better be going home now, Bruce. My mother will wonder where I am.

When Billy got home, he was greeted by the warmth of the kitchen. Mother had made bread and there was the pot of beans on the stove. Billy knew that despite the fact that some of the other kids made fun of him for being poor, that he was rich indeed. He told Mother about how poor Bruce and his mother were. He knew that mother would try to do something about it.

What do you think his mother might have done?

(Yes, this is a true story.)

Why to Opt For Modern Showers

The foremost purpose of taking a shower is to maintain hygiene in a safe manner. It is easier done that bathing, especially for disabled and elderly people as one require very less effort to step in and out, which in turn presents a lower risk of slipping and falling.

There are many kinds of showers available these days, such as electric showers, power showers and mixer showers.

Electric showers provide instantaneous showering any time for any number of people. They take water directly from a cold water supply and heat it as it is used, so the need for storing hot water does not arise. They are also easy to install, either in traditional bathrooms or in dedicated cubicles.

Power Showers produce a much more powerful spray from the faucets than either electric or over head tank fed mixer showers, as the water pressure is enhanced by a pump that generates extraordinarily powerful flow rates.

Mixer showers do not require electrical connections. They are also are easy to install. For homes with enough supply of hot water, these mixer showers are the best option as they work by mixing together hot and cold water supplied to the desired temperature. The water flow levels are also better than electric showers.

Shower models come in all hues and types that can fit to any budget. The minimalist hand held shower to classic ones which can increase and decrease water jet force according to one needs.

As the arena of showering shifted to a bathroom from open water sources, cases of drowning and getting contagious diseases have gone to negligible levels.

Replacing a Bathtub

Why are you replacing a bathtub?

Replacing a bathtub is a big job, and you should first consider why you want to replace the bathtub. Removing a bathtub is not an easy job, and you should first consider your reasons, and see if there are other options. If maintained well, a bathtub will give good service for many years.

If your existing bathtub is pink or aqua, I can see your point. In that case, reglazing might be an option. This is not inexpensive, but will eliminate the struggle of getting the bathtub out of it's existing space.

If the bathtub is white, and the bathtub surround is shabby, or the enclosure doors are in bad shape, you might be better served by installing a new surround and new shower doors. this can give a bathtub a stunning new appearance.

If you are installing a new surround, take this occasion to install an anti-scald device. This will give you the pleasure of even water temperature even if someone flushes a toilet, or the washer begins filling. Instead of water flow suddenly becoming icy or scalding hot, the water temperature will maintain evenly.

This is a great time to install a new updated faucet system which will also enhance the appearance of your bath area.

Going Green tips

With the trend toward "going green", working with what you already have could be your contribution. Considering some or all of the going green tips above could save you money and put one less thing in the landfill.

On the other hand, if the bathtub itself is in a bad state, then replacement might be the only option.

Before replacing a bathtub:

  1. Shop and consider the options available.
  2. Consider what bathroom in your home this is, and who will be using the bathtub.
  3. Don't forget the possibility of future resale. You may have no desire to sell at this time, but life is full of change. Think about who would be the bulk of your market. For instance, if your home has three or four bedrooms, families with children would most likely be the bulk of your market. With that in mind, replacing a standard bathtub with a whirlpool in a main bath would probably not be a good idea. People with small children might be put off by this addition to a main bath.
  4. Review the value and benefits of different bathtub material and different styles before making a final decision.
  5. And lastly, decide how you will get the tub into it's final space. Take measurements and think where through your home the tub will have to travel to get there. Replacing a bathtub in a finished home as opposed to installing in new construction where these elements are added before walls are finished, are very different situations. You will need to find a solution before making a commitment.

A Guide For Planning Your New Shower

Adding a shower to your home adds great convenience as well a resale value. However, before you look at shower trays and units, there are a few things you need to know. These are a few tips to guide you in the process of planning for a new shower. Write down the answers to these questions before you contact a professional or attempt a do it yourself project.

Has the room had a previous shower installation? If so, will you be reinstalling a new shower kit, or remodeling the shower entirely?

Where are the main water supply pipe and the waste pipe located? The closer you are to the main water supply, the easier and more cost effective it will be to build, and a shower closer to the main pipe will gain you the best water pressure.

How much space do you have available for your shower? Make sure to take the space needed to swing open shower doors into account when measuring your space. A corner shower is often the most space wise, usually allowing the greatest freedom of movement in the room as a whole as well as a larger shower to be installed.

What is your households existing water system? While the water system in your home won't dictate the style or model of shower you choose, it can limit your selection. Make sure you are looking at installing a shower that will work with your existing utilities. A mixer, power or electric shower may be the correct choice for your water system. Ask a professional for help if you are unsure which one is right for your home.

Now that you have the basic information down, what are the differences between the kinds of shower mentioned above? Three of the more common types of showers are mixer, power and electric models. It is important to have a basic idea of the differences between them. This will help you choose which is suitable for your home.

A mixer shower requires a minimum of 0.1 bar pressure and both hot and cold water feeds. These are a good choice if you have a high pressure unvented system or a fully modulating combi boiler in your home. A mixer shower mixes water from the hot and cold water tanks, to keep your shower water temperature consistent.

An electric shower is a possibility for a high or a low pressure system. It requires only a cold water feed, as only the water which will be used for the shower will be heated within the unit by electricity. While this system eliminates the need to heat more water than you may use, it can use more electricity. An electric shower should be installed by a qualified electrician.

A power shower can be a mixer or an electric style. What makes them different? Power showers use an electric pump to increase water pressure.

Reglazing Bathtubs for a Whole New Experience

Is there a need to provide a more worthy bathing experience in the household? Then bathtub reglazing may be an option.

Bathtub Reglazing

Bathtub reglazing or refurnishing can improve the features and quality of the present bathtub. The refinishing and the new touches can give a total makeover to the bathing facility. The body bath will be more than inviting, it will be exhilarating.

Implementing the Reglazing

Should one feel the need to reglaze the present bathtub, there are two options to proceed. It can be a do-it-yourself experience or professional services or assistance may be sought. It really depends on the size of the tub and the size of the jobs. It will also depend to the owner, whether or not there is enough time to spare for the endeavor or sufficient resources to use.

What to Reglaze or Refurnish?

The bathtub can be refinished in any way deemed proper by the owner. Whatever the imagination may suggest can be achieved.

1. Bath Floors

The bath floors can be made non-slippery so as to provide more mobility during bath time, no need to worry over sudden slips or freak accidents.

2. Styles

The usual styles of bathtub are built-in, freestanding, soaking or specialty. Some choose the clawfoot for more antique look.

Whirlpools, Jacuzzis and jets can also be installed. Just make sure there is enough supply of hot water to maximize this experience.

3. Bathtub Material

The tub replacement can also go according to a specific theme. Tubs now come in different quality materials. They can be made of porcelain on steel, fiberglass, composite, cast iron, acrylic or cultured marble. See all choices available.

4. Size

The size can also be designated. Single bathtubs are available, although bathtubs for two may be more preferable for couples. Be sure to try it out first before buying. It should have enough space for stretching out. It should also support properly the back, head and neck.

5. Faucet and shower valves

There are also a variety of faucet and shower valves to choose from. Pick one that will best make the shower experience a comfortable one.

6. Accessories

The tub can also be made aesthetically pleasing. Special lightings and enclosures may be provided to provide a certain ambience. Even audio and DVD systems may be installed. Choose any accessory that will satisfy the desires. Just make sure that safety standards are still met.

Consider all these options in planning the bathtub. Also make sure that it fits the budget. Design the bathroom without letting all the money down the drain.

Seek Professional Experience

Should one not feel confident enough to take the reglazing matters alone, then it is not bad to seek the help of experts.

Some services are available within the area. Just check out the address book. The Internet also provides services. Some web sites can connect a person to a contractor within the area.

Asking for recommendations from other friends would be helpful. Find a contractor that has successfully and properly installed a bathtub.

The next thing to consider with the bathtub remodeler is the estimate if the project. The contractors can coordinate with the owners on arranging the matters so the budget can meet the plan.

After negotiating with the contractor, the project must be scheduled. This will matter most if the owner wants to oversee the whole project. It is also important to comply with local building inspections.

The Remodeling Experience

There are many things to learn in remodeling a bathtub. It is imperative that fixtures and accessories of premium brand be chosen. One also has to see to it from the planning stage, implementation until it is fully finished.

The possibilities are endless. With reglazing, the bathtub is more than just a washing and showering facility. It will be the ultimate expression of the valued comfort, safety and cleanliness.

Claire Bowes is a successful Webmaster and publisher of bathtub refinishing. Claire provides more information on her site about bathtub reglazing that you can research at home.

How Do You Judge the Quality of Soft Bath Towels?

If you were to ask the average person how to measure the quality of a set of sheets and they will usually know that the answer is by the thread count. Ask the exact same person how to measure the quality of a set of luxury bath towels and they are likely to give a puzzled look and a shrug of the shoulders. Soft luxury towels, just like a set of sheets have a quantitative measurement that can be used to judge their quality. That measurement is the gram weight per square meter.

The higher the gram weight the softer, more absorptive and luxurious the towel will be. A soft, plush cotton towel would have a gram weight in the 600's. A towel with a gram weight in the 700's would be even softer and suppler and these would be considered luxury bath towels while the softest and most luxurious towels would have a gram weight of 800 or more. You should choose the highest gram weight you can afford if you are looking for soft luxury towels either for your own home or as a gift for a friend or family member. There is no substitute for quality and you will find that with proper care luxury bath towels hold up the best even after extended use and multiple washings.

Soft towels are one of life's simple pleasures as well as being a necessity for everyday use. You have to shower or bathe everyday so taking a small step to make that as pleasant an experience as possible helps put more joy into your life. Once you step out of the bathroom in the morning you will be faced with the sometime stressful and harsh realities of life, but while you are in there you can imagine yourself at a luxury spa drying off with a luxury towel after a nice hot sauna.

Now that you know that the way to judge the quality of soft bath towels is by the gram weight you will never settle for "lightweight" towels again. The experience of enjoying soft luxury bath towels is something you don't want to miss.

Bathroom Remodeling - Tips For Hiring a Professional Decorator

One of the challenging things to do when you're redecorating your bathroom is to find and hire a competent professional who is capable of not only giving you a beautiful bathroom, but also making the space function properly; and all at a reasonable cost to you. Sometimes all you need is a few quick tips or basic guidelines to follow when you're hiring a remodeling professional or decorator.

Even if your remodeling job is as simple as replacing old fixtures with new ones, you still want to work with a contractor who is familiar with important building codes otherwise you could wind up having to tear down all the work you paid for and start all over again. The contractors should also know the plumbing, wiring and structural aspects of the project to make sure you wind up with a professional finish.

There's a number of options for you to choose from to help you in selecting the best professional for your bathroom remodelling project. You may need to hire an architect, interior designer and a building/remodeling contractor - depending on the size and how complex the actual job is. Put some thought into this process before you start borrowing money.

With homeowners scaling back on remodeling projects because of the weak global economy, be careful not to sign with a contractor who is more hungry for your cash than he is interested in doing a great job that will bring repeat business. Word of mouth and thoroughly checking their references should help you find the right decorator or builder for the job you have in mind.

Keeping an eye on your cash is one thing but an even more important aspect of your project is health and safety. If you have guys onsite who aren't sure what they're doing with wiring, plumbing or gas supplies it could have lethal consequences for somebody in your home or for one of the contractors themselves. Don't cut corners on this stuff - the safety of your family could be at stake.

It's so, so important that you hire licensed and insured professionals to complete your remodelling project. Qualified and quality contractors are far more likely to finish the job in a timely and tidy manner than some cowboys you hired for one third of the normal rates. The contractors should apply for the proper permits and follow code from A-Z with no bending of the rules. If your home is inspected by building code officials who determine the work was not completed properly, this will only lead to stress, frustration and additional costs for you. In serious cases you might have to tear all the work back down.

The contractor should apply for the permit in his or her name, not yours. Make sure that you get this in writing before any work begins. This holds the contractor, and not you, responsible for all work that is to be completed. Further, you and the contractor should cooperate with each inspection at each stage of the remodeling project to make sure nothing is missed and everyone knows what's being done.

If you decide to act as your own contractor for your bathroom remodelling project, make sure you research and know everything that is involved; put in a lot of study time for your own sake. Familiarize yourself with the building codes and legal language to ensure that your subcontractors are following the rules and you're not getting duped.

You will have to rely on the expertise of your subcontractors to complete the work, but ultimately, you will be responsible for ensuring that they act with integrity and within your budget. So, make sure you are working with people you can trust; there's nothing worse than having to look over peoples shoulders to make sure they're doing the job properly.

You will also want to become familiar with applying for building permits and how to plan for inspections. This is important for you to know whether or not a job is going in the right direction or not.

Change Your Thinking About Life

What do I do when I get down and out. Well that use to happen to me often and I seemed to suffer with some minor depression. It would seem like time would stand still. I would look at the clock and notice the time. Let's say 2:23 in the afternoon. I would look back to see what time it was about fifteen minutes latter and it would be 2:26. Wow what in the heck is going on with this clock.

I just couldn't believe it seemed like the day would never end. I would just sit there and think about all the stuff going on in my life, good and bad of course. This seemed to last until I was in my early twenties. I just didn't want to feel like this any more. I made a Conscious design not to get depressed period. I never wanted to feel like that again.

I read a book on ESP and in the book it described visualizing a rose as you went to sleep. I started doing this every night and while I was doing the exercise it seemed to make me feel relaxed in a way I never had felt before. The reason for the exercise was to teach you to visualize something peaceful. This in turn would put you in a peaceful state of mind.

Then a thought came into my noggin. What if when ever I start to feel bad or seem to be going into a sort of depressive state of mind I change my thoughts. It worked... I would start to visualize something else that made me feel comfortable and give me a peaceful feeling. Man was I surprised with my results.

Keep in mind I didn't think of this all on my own but I did put the pieces of the puzzle I needed to together that I needed to change my life. It seemed like I could use this form of self control in different parts of my life. If I was at work and someone made me mad.... Well this didn't work all the time... I still got mad. Let's pick something else OK.

I would worry about something on the job that wasn't going right. Then I would get irritated over something else that wasn't even related to what I was worrying about. Why did I take it out on the other person when what I was really mad about was something else. We do this all the time in our lives. We seem to get mad, get even or give up. Why do we do this and what can we do to stop it.

My main point to all of this is we can change our thinking and change our lives. We can learn new things to change our thinking. We don't need to give up hope that we will always be like this. Roof Shingles Three Time Saving Tips

If you're looking for "how to roof shingles" information, you've come to the right place. It's a tough job, but there's no sense making it take longer than necessary. Here are three tips to speed things up.

How to Roof Shingles - Tip #1 Stand Up!

Some roofers shingle sitting down or kneeling, but they have to keep jumping up to change position, get more shingles, get more nails and dispose of wrappers. You can save a lot of time and energy by just standing while you shingle. It takes a couple weeks for your back muscles to adjust, but after that it is definitely easier and faster.

At the end of the day when you're beat, you can always sit down and knock out a few more bundles.

How to Roof Shingles - Tip #2 Don't Set Your Nail Gun Down!

Some speedy roofers set their nail gun down between every shingle, but frankly, I don't know how they do it. I like to hang onto the gun between shingles. Using the gauge on the bottom of the nailer, you can position the shingle and nail it with no delay when you're ready. You will save a little time on every shingle you install.

How to Roof Shingles - Tip #3 Grab Them Right!

Make it a point to grab the shingle in the exact spot you will be holding it for nailing. For me, since I'm right-handed, that would be the bottom left corner.

By grabbing it in the right spot, you can butt it right up against the adjacent shingle, while checking the bottom edge for alignment, all without any wasted motion.

These may seem like little things, but they can add up to a lot of time saved on your roofing project.

Of course there's a lot more you need to know about "how to roof shingles". To make the job easier help you and avoid big mistakes, go to: http://www.roofingsecrets.com

Home Improvement - Why You Should Hire An Expert To Do Your Bathroom Renovation

If you are thinking about doing your own bathroom renovation, you really should think twice about it unless of course you are an expert in that field. If you are new to DIY home projects, there are a few crucial issues to consider especially if you have absolutely no experience in doing any kind of bathroom renovation projects. There are reasons why bathroom renovation experts are very highly paid for their expertise.

If the question "How hard can it be?" is ringing in your head while you are thinking about undertaking your own bathroom renovation, you might be in for a nightmare. The toilet looks simple and easy enough to remove but are you very sure you know how to ensure that its properly sealed after it is installed? Can you imagine the mess if it leaks after installation and ever worst while using it? If you think that running a bead of caulk around the base of your toilet is the way to go, then you definitely need to hire an expert.

Moving To The Shower

As you have been warned about the difficulties one can expect by installing the toilet, let's move on now to the shower. It may look easy at first glance but if you are not familiar with plumbing and using torches for welding then you may want to stay clear of the shower. If a shower is not installed correctly, you can end up ruining not only your bathroom but also your whole house with water. The shower is the most expensive part of the bathroom to get installed due to the labor and involved. Do call and hire an expert if you do not want to encounter leaks around your house and ruining your bathroom. Though the cost might be a little steep, at least you will be able sleep at night and get to use your bathroom without any hassle.

It is so tempting to pick up your tools and start doing the bathroom renovation yourself but be smart and call in the experts to do the work for you. You will have peace of mind and the results you get will be well worth the price paid. You can plan your bathroom renovation but when it come to doing the actual work, you are advised to seriously consider calling in the experts.

Are Resistance Piers Right For Your Home?

The resistance pier belongs to a family of foundation repair products that are sometimes referred to as micro piles, push piers, or steel piers. These foundation repair products are driven hydraulically into the soil using the structural weight of the building as a reaction force.

A friction reduction collar is attached to the lead section of pier pipe. The purpose of the collar is to create an opening in the soil that has a larger diameter than the pier pipe. This dramatically reduces the skin friction on the pier pipe as it is driven into the soil and allows the installer to load test and verify that the pier encountered firm bearing stratum or rock that is suitable to support the design load.

Resistance piers like other steel piers are an end-bearing pier that does not rely upon nor requires skin friction to produce support. Each pier is field load tested after it is installed. The piers are able to develop a factor of safety because the piers are installed and load tested individually using the maximum weight of the structure as the reaction force. The ability of the system to develop significant factors of safety comes from the different methods used between pier installation and load transfer during restoration.

The piers are driven individually and the entire structure works as the reaction; but during load transfer hydraulic cylinders are placed at multiple locations thus reducing the load on each pier to only the design working load. A building with substantial construction and rigidity can develop greater pier factors of safety than a weaker structure. A quality resistance pier system, incorporating a synchronized lifting system, is the first step towards fixing your structures failing foundation.

Bathroom Mirror - As Important As Personal Grooming Itself

You wake up very late in the morning. You're late! You have a big meeting that will start in a few minutes and you have not even washed your face first. Of course you will skip breakfast, you're late. Of course you will not sit and read the morning newspaper, you're late. The very thing that you want to do now is to get in your office and be ready to face a crowd of colleagues, superiors, and prospective clients. You want to be in there, right there and then. But not just yet, not just yet...

You can skip breakfast and you can skip your normal morning routine of reading the newspaper. But you cannot skip a bathroom routine. You can even skip bathing, but not that one, you have to, you just have to, check yourself in the bathroom mirror. Especially now that you are about to be in a very important meeting, you have to be presentable, and that includes your physical image. You just can't look presentable when you have all the marks of an (apparently a very) good night sleep. And the only way you'll know if you are fine to go out now and run to your office or if you still need a little (but much needed) grooming is by looking at your trusty bathroom mirror. Your bathroom mirror will tell you what needs to be done, and from it you'll know if you can now run. That's how important, personal grooming is, that's how important a bathroom mirror is.

So, you can always buy meals at take-out counters outside your place, and you can always read the newspaper supply of your office, and you can always (although hopefully not) postpone taking a bath, but you can never, not have a bathroom mirror. It seems to be as necessary as the bathroom itself.

The bathroom mirror comes with wide range of designs, shapes, sizes, and of course colors. There are the simple but beautiful frames made of wood or metal, among others. There are the frames with intricate designs. You can have a bathroom mirror that is big enough for you to check your whole body, and there is also of course a bathroom mirror which is just large enough for you to check your face. Most bathroom mirrors are designed to hand on the bathroom wall, but if you have a bigger space, you can have a bathroom mirror that reclines at a desired angle. There are of course special mirrors, like the common bathroom mirror which is also a medicine or toiletries cabinet. And since a bathroom is almost always wet, there is the fog-free bathroom mirror which as the name suggests, eliminates the problem of precipitations on the mirror when the bathroom gets extra humid. The important thing is, you have to find the one that suits your taste, your bathroom (space), and of course, the always important budget.

A bathroom mirror is so important that you just have to look at it (and to yourself of course) even though every second that goes by means you are getting more late for work or school. But then again, you can always wake up early and not curse every second while you are in front of your bathroom mirror.

Creating Your Electricity

Creating your own electricity and generating your own power has always been one of my dreams. Having a self sufficient home, not only a house that takes care of itself by generating its own electricity through windmills or solar panels but the satisfaction knowing that no matter what happens to the electrical companies you will always have electricity at your home.

What a wonderful feeling it would be to get a check back from the utility company instead of paying them every single month. I don't know about you but my utility bills are ridiculous and seemed to be going up in price constantly. I can't believe all the fees they have been charging for years to all of their customers. If you add all the fees for every person in the city or county this comes to a large, a very large number and it's getting worse not better.

Generating your own electricity with solar or wind power is definitely green thinking. This is going to be the wave of the future as fuel used to create electricity continues to rise in price. I really can't imagine what the price of electricity is going to be like in 10 years as the mass consumption continues to rise in developing countries.

We have got to start taking care of our own needs through solar or wind power. We have got to start creating our own electricity to become self reliant. The more self reliant we become as a nation the less dependent we will be on major corporations, especially large power conglomerates.

Creating our own electricity can also be used for electrical cars that can be purchased in the future. Think of the money you will say in fuel costs as the price of gasoline continues to increase as well as less pollution into our environment.

This is definitely the wave of the future and common sense tells us this. I suggest you read this article again if you haven't figured out some of the problems coming our way in the future.

Think green and together we can start saving the planet.

While searching for new alternatives and trying to get some advice on creating your own electricity I came across a book you can purchase in digital format. This book seems to have quite a bit of information on creating your own electricity for a totally self sufficient home.

This book has been created in digital format to reduce the consumption of trees and the waste involved in creating a regular book. What a wonderful idea for helping our environment in quite a few ways.

Remodeling Your Kitchen and Bathroom Cabinets

Refurbishing the kitchen and the bathroom is a great way to give a new look to your home and also adding to its resale value. There are certain issues like the plumbing set-up and some gadgets and fixtures remodeling a kitchen or a bathroom becomes quite an expensive project at times. A cabinet redo is a very intelligent way to give these two much-used units of your home, a very new look and that too by dint of a very affordable price.

As the cabinets are the most essential and primary aspect of these two rooms, remodeling them can do wonders and that is done at a less expense. The whole process is a very time-consuming and grueling one and you should set off with it only if after careful scrutiny, you feel that your cabinets genuinely require an update and are never a wastage of your energy as well as money.

Some remodeling processes concerning kitchen and bathroom are as simple as a pot of mineral spirits and paint. But you should make sure that the time, energy and the money you spend should be meaningful. You check your existing cabinets very minutely and only after that should you decide whether to go about the refurbishing process at all. You should ensure that some potential faults like gaps between fitted cabinets, dislocated doors and defective drawers are not there after the refinish. Sometimes there are certain fittings that are never made good by any kind of refurbishing project. That causes an useless drain of time and money. You should start with a project and look for different styles and themes only if you are absolutely sure of the effect that it would bring.

Refinishing Techniques

Just a fresh coat of paint is not all in a cabinet redo process. It includes a number of other ways in order to give your kitchen or bathroom a very new look. In case the cabinets are very greasy and dirty due to constant use then cleaning them up with a good-quality bleaching can be a good and cost-effective way to give it a new look. A concoction of linseed oil, bleach and boiling water is a very effective cleaner which brightens up the cabinet. If this cleaning procedure is not enough then you can peel off the existing paint from the wood and apply a fresh coat. Some people like the simple wood finish of their cabinet.

In that case you can just stain the wood and put a layer of polyurethane to protect the grain. But if you are totally inclined to change the look altogether then you can always select a new color in accordance with the total dcor of the kitchen as well as your home in totality. Special kinds of painting processes like rag-rolling or sponging gives a very unique texture to the wood.

When kitchen or bathroom remodeling is concerned then refinishing just the cabinets may be a very good or the only way to give them a spick and span look again. Let your own creativity give birth to newer ideas with which you can update the rooms and personalize them according to your taste and preference.

When We Choose Misery Over Happiness

I am not one to feel sorry for most people. They seem to have a unique ability to cause themselves the most damage during certain parts of their lives. I have met some pretty self destructive people in my life. Being raised by a mother that lived in misery and love.

My mother had a difficult childhood. It seemed as if every corner she turned there was a obstacle either right in front of here or waiting just around the corner. Her father died when she was 12 year old. He was a farm laborer and didn't make much money. In other words they were poor...... She got sent to live with a few foster families and according to her she was molested by one of the fathers she lived with.

Soon her older sister invited her to live with her. My aunt was married to the owner of a pottery business and had 2 children about 10 years younger than my mother. My aunt soon realized she had a live in baby sitter that allowed her to stay out drinking most of the day.

My Uncle was what you would call a drunk back then, now we call these people alcoholics. Well any way I think you are starting to get a picture of my mothers life up to this point. It is probably safe to assume that this isn't the ideal life for a young woman.

The next event to happen in my moms life was for my uncle to fall in the shower one night after tying one on that night. He died soon after but my aunt seemed to make a another good choice and ended up marring the owner of the bar that they spent most of their time in.
The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. Allan K. Chalmers

By this time my mom was in High School and met my future father. It wasn't exactly a marriage made in heaven. My dad was always an easy going man. He seemed to let most stuff go in one ear and out the other.

As you guessed it they had a few children. Nice one Dad and Mom. According to the books I have read on Angelic beings. People that believe in the after life and angels. They tell me I had a choice and was able to choose my parents....... What was I thinking...... I should have choose someone with some money and a couple of parents that were deeply in love .

How did I end up here in this situation.

I ended up loving my parents like most of us. They seemed to be doing the best that they could possibly do raising me, my bother and my sister. My mom and dad ended up getting a divorce and I went to live with my father.

My Father is remarried to a wonderful woman that seems to bring him a lot of happiness.
I haven't seen my mother for a while now. She lives with a life of excuses and misery. Her childhood was not the greatest but that doesn't give her the right to bring misery into other peoples lives. She has made a conscious choice to live what seems to be a painful life. Maybe her choices in life have made me choose happiness over misery.

I have always wondered what it is that motivates someone to live a life of true unhappiness when it takes the same amount of energy to live a life of joy. Life is meant to be full of joy and happiness so start today by making the right choices to live a fulfilling life of happiness.

If you are reading this and can't make up your mind what kind of life you truly want to live visit me at http://live.spiritualideas.com/ . Change your thinking and change your life.

Get The Best Estimate For The Cost Of A Remodel

The cost of your remodel depends upon several factors such as the cost of materials and fixtures, the extent of your remodeling plans and whether you choose to hire a general contractor or do it yourself.. Finding the right general contractor and subcontractors can be a big challenge. You can save time searching by getting free quotes from prescreened contractors.

There are several ways to get an estimate for the cost of a remodel project:

Cost per square foot

This is the most common way to do a quick estimate. This method simply assigns a cost per square foot of area that will be remodeled. The cost can vary between $100 to $700 per square foot.

You can quickly see that this estimate has little value since the range of potential costs is so great. While $700 per square foot is unusual and it is unlikely you could spend that, $100 per square foot is unrealistically low unless you make great efforts to minimize the cost.

The RemodelEstimates.com calculator gives a more accurate estimate by considering information about the rooms that will be remodeled, the level of finish that you want, and how you will manage the project.

Estimate from a contractor or an architect

With a general idea of the rooms that you want to remodel as noted above, you should be able to get an estimate of cost from a contractor or an architect. They will likely use a cost per square foot to calculate an estimate, but they will not use a range as broad as $100 to $700. Find a great contractor fast and for free. To ensure the quote from the contractor is accurate you need to give the complete information about your project. To make these tasks easier and your whole remodeling project run smoother you should invest in a good organizer like The Complete Remodeling Workbook and Organizer.

While this estimate will be much more accurate than an estimate based strictly on the square footage, you will not have the ability to change your preferences and get a new estimate very easily from a contractor or architect. The remodelestimates.com calculator uses the same types of information as an architect or contractor would, and because it is fully automated, it allows you to create estimates for different combinations of materials and room changes for free.

Bathroom Showers 101 - Choosing the Right Shower For the Bathroom

Are you looking for a replacement for your outdated bathroom showers? Here are 7 bathroom shower options along with a brief explanation of their features to make choosing your showers for the bathroom an easier task.

1. Manual shower valves

Manual shower valves are the most basic of all bathroom showers. Usually, they only have one lever control to manage the flow of water and water temperature. They are fairly simple to use and are inexpensive.

2. Thermostatic shower valves

One advantage of having a thermostatic shower valve is that it provides a constant, even temperature and can easily cope with fluctuations in the flow and temperature of the cold and hot water feeds.

Most of this kind of bathroom showers sport extra anti-scald safety features. Most also cut off the flow of water ever tapping into the cold water supply seem near-impossible.

3. Concealed and exposed valves

Concealed or exposed valves are those shower valves mounted on the wall. While a concealed shower valve may be mounted on the wall like the exposed valves, they usually only have the control levers visible so that the entire mechanism is unexposed. Many valves of bathroom showers that can be mounted on the bathroom walls are either exposed or unexposed.

4. Twin shower valves

A twin shower valve has two levers compared to that of the simple manual and single-levered basic shower valves. One control is designed to manage the rate of the flow of water while the other control is for the purpose of controlling water temperature.

5. Triple shower valves

As the name suggests, a triple shower valve has three control levers. One control lever is for the water flow while another is for the water temperature. The third lever, however, is usually a diverter. A diverter is useful if you're using two-headed showers.

6. Sequential shower valves

Sequential showers have only one lever. Rotating the lever at one time can already increase or decrease the water pressure and increase or decrease the water temperature.

7. Shower panels

Shower panels are very much like the triple shower valves in that they have three control levers: one for the water pressure, the other for the temperature and finally, a diverter. The only difference is that the levers are arranged resembling that of panel controls.

Specifications of shower panels vary widely but they most of the time sport the three control levers. The only drawback with shower panels is that there may be a need to regulate water pressure by installing a shower pump.

Bathroom showers are aplenty in the market and each may have added features different from that of another.

Surviving As A Contractor In California

So you want to make big money making a living as a contractor in the state of California. Well now I bet you have seen contractors on TV or maybe you know someone who is a contractor. You see these men and women playing the part as Mr. or Mrs. Money bags. If you have the slightest thought that becoming a contractor will provide you with a life of riches think again.

Most contractors that I know and have worked with over the years don't think of there jobs as easy. They have to work everyday and a lot into the night doing estimates or meeting with potential clients because they are to busy during the day. The life of most contractors in the beginning will be difficult to say the least. But if successful you will make a great living for yourself and your family.

Now that we got the false illusion of the contractor answering his cell phone all day at some nice golf course having lunch talking about the money that he just made selling his oil stocks. We can start on reality. If being a contractor was that easy everyone would be a contractor. Right..... Well maybe not everyone.

I have been a contractor for over 22 years and in construction for 30 year. I have seen a lot of changes over the years. I remember when a few contractors that I worked for made a lot of money during the late 1970's. These guys had Ferraris and money to burn with one exception they had no idea how to save any of it. These guys went on vacations and bought extravagant toys for them selves. Out of most of the big framing contractors I worked for about 10 percent are still in business or actually saved their money during the good times so that they could make it through the bad times.

These contractors never thought it was going to end. Life on easy street that is. But it did and most went by the way side. I guess that is the nature of business. Especially the current economic business cycles that we seem to go through over the years. If you don't have the money to advertise or carry a payroll. Your business is going to suffer during the bad times. Sure there is credit and bank loans but you still have to pay that money back. IF you can't save your money stash some away for advertising.

Some of the best advice I can give a contractor anywhere especially in the state of California is " Don't Think The Great Times Of Easy Money Will Last Forever". Save some of the money you make just in case you need to get through the bad times. You will thank me for this latter, Some time down the road. Take this advice and put it into action starting right now.

When Google Doesn't Matter

My kitchen sink clogged up today.

No problem, I thought. I'll just call a local plumber to help me out.

Hopped onto Google.

Typed in "St. Louis Plumbers."

And I was presented with several excellent options.

The first hit was a plumbing company located a few miles from my house.

Naturally, I called them first.

And nobody picked up.

So I tried the next hit on Google. Also close to my house.

And nobody picked up.

Then I scrolled over to the sponsored links. I clicked on a promising looking website description, got their phone number, called, got a voicemail, pressed extension #2 for "Bruce..."

And nobody picked up.

"Damn it! This is ridiculous!" I exclaimed.

"Screw this -- I'm calling Roto-Rooter."

I took a wild guess and typed in roto-rooter.com.

Bingo!

I called their customer service hotline. An agent picked up the call on the second ring.

Woo hoo!

"I'm sorry to hear about your kitchen, sir. We'll take care of you!" she promised.

Heck yeah!

After I gave her some basic information, she replied, "We can have someone at your home within the hour."

"Really?"

"Absolutely sir! Let me check our schedule..."

Sure enough, the plumber was over right away. He took care of my clog, told me how to prevent it in the future and even gave me a free sample of Drano!

LESSON LEARNED: any number multiplied by zero is still zero.

In other words: it doesn't matter how great your service is if nobody can get a hold of you to find out how great it is.

Sure, quality is vital, but accessibility comes first. Without it, you may as well be winking in the dark. Because if you're not Available, customers are going to find Another company to hire.

LET ME ASK YA THIS...

If nobody's there to answer your customer's phone calls, does your Google ranking even matter?

LET ME SUGGEST THIS...

For the list called, "22 Questions to Sidestep Entrepreneurial Atrophy," send an email to me, and I'll send you the list for free!

Attic Odors and Strange Smells

If you've ever opened up your attic access hole, only to find one of the worst odors you have ever smelled in your whole life, I've been there too. What causes these horrible smells and what can you do about them?

Let's start with the cause of these smells, moisture, dirt, mold, mildew, dead animals, animals that make their home in your attic and the biggest problem of all is normally poor ventilation.

Poor ventilation is the biggest problem with musty smells in the attic. These smells are often caused from moisture accumulating in the building materials over time. If there is enough moisture in the attic, the wood will start to rot but this wouldn't be a normal situation, unless there was a roof or water leak.

Roof leaks can cause a constant supply of water to one part of the attic. This constant supply of water will eventually rot the wood and damage the ceiling. Water leaks from pipes can provide a steady supply of water and the situation can attracts termites and mold. Not a good thing.

One of the worst possible smells or odors in your attic would be a dead animal. Don't under estimate the size of some of these animals, they have found dead raccoons, cats, snakes, large birds, squirrels, rats and mice in some attics. These animals usually enter through damaged access holes or vent blocks, roof vents, large gaps, holes and even fireplace chimneys.

Once these animals die, their bodies start to decompose and produce one horrible odor. Once the body is completely decomposed, the smell usually goes away if the attic is ventilated properly. These smells can seep into the homes living area, often creating a room that no one wants to enter.

Home peststhat make their home in your attics, often create smells from urinating and defecating in the areas around their nest. Large birds like owls can become a problem over time.

Now that we've figured out some of the causes for attic odors and strange smells, what can we do to prevent this from happening and if it's already happened, how can we get rid of the smell.

What To Expect When Remodelling Your Bathtub

When someone talks about a bathtub remodel, there might be one of two ways they are leaning. It depends on what exactly you're looking for. If by bathtub remodel you mean you simply want your bathtub to look nice and new like it used to, then there are some cheaper methods to go about fixing it up. If by remodel you mean an entirely new bathtub--maybe an upgrade to a Jacuzzi? That's an entirely different story.

For someone who wants a bathtub remodel that involves keeping their same tub, just making it look good again, they should considering refinishing their bathtub. The refinished tub may not have the fancy allure of a brand new tub with Jacuzzi jets or other upgrades, but a refinishing will still be a bathtub remodel job that shows a drastic improvement over what you had before. Plus, the job will be much cheaper since a brand new tub will often require demolition work, work on the pipes, and construction that will raise the bill well beyond just the bathtub.

Years of use will result in basic wear that takes away from tub's appearance. Yellowing, stains, mold build up or tub ring--all of these things are common. The idea of a bathtub remodel is that you can clean all of these problems without having to spend a fortune on a new tub. A bathtub remodel on this scale can be fairly inexpensive and adds an instant appearance boost.

A larger bathtub remodel, like changing out an entirely new bathtub, is something that will need professional work. In this case, check many different local contractors to compare prices and time frames. A major bathtub remodel will shut that bathroom off from the family until it is finished, so these are all major considerations.

Compare prices and options, and decide which is best for you. After making a decision, follow through to return your bathroom, and specifically your bathtub, to its previous glory.

Finding the Right Types of Paint For Your Home

It is no secret that repainting your home can be a big undertaking. First you have to decide whether you will complete the project on your own or hire a contracted painter to complete the job. Then you have to decide what color you want to use in the painting project and how much the entire project will cost you. However, in the end, nothing can freshen up the look of your home and create jealous neighbors quite like a new paint job.

If you are thinking of having your home repainted, you might be thinking of finding the right types of paint for your home. This can be a very big task if you are going to attempt the painting project on your own, because there are many things to consider when deciding on a type of paint. You will have to think about what brand you want to purchase, how much you want to spend on the paint, and which type is the right one and will last the longest. When you go to the store to buy the paint for this project, there will hopefully be assistants there that will help you with all of these paint questions. Probably one of the biggest decisions if you are going to paint your home by yourself is how much you are willing to spend on the paint. You will probably want to use the highest quality paint that you can afford for this project because it will not only last longer, but will do a better job of protecting your home than other low cost paints.

The benefit of hiring a contracted painter for your painting project versus trying to complete it by yourself is that you will not have to worry about finding the right types of paint for your home. A professional painter should be trained in the correct types of paint to use for your painting project and will be able to choose the one that will work best on your home. Therefore, really one of the only decisions that you will have to make is what color you would like to have the house painted, which can be a big enough decision in itself.

When deciding whether to complete the project on your own or hire a contracted painter, you might just want to schedule meetings with a few painters to discuss how they would complete the project to get a feel for which decision is best for you.

There are many things to think about when it comes time to have your house repainted. If you decide to complete the project on your own, you will have to make many decisions regarding finding the right types of paint for your home. If you hire a contracted painter on the other hand, they will already known which types of paint will last the longest on your home and will help protect your home the best. Either way, hopefully when your painting project is completed, you will be able to take some time to relax and enjoy the fresh look that the new paint job has given your home.

Cost Effective Stair Building

What is the most cost effective way of building stairs? Why do the tract homes use on site methods of construction? When you think of a factory assembling a product on a assembly line you think why not a home. Why do they still build homes on lots or residential home sites?

If homes could be built in a factory cheaper than on site that is exactly what every home builder would be doing. They just haven't quite figured it out yet. When dealing with the large amounts of materials required to build a house and of course the expense of shipping. It is not cost effective to build a conventional home in a factory and ship it over long distances.

This is the biggest problem with cost effective stair construction. Most prefabricated stairs you will notice are spiral stairs. These stairs are smaller than most stairs that are used for multi level construction.

Spiral stairs are hard for your average carpenter to build. These stairs can be purchased from a factory easily and quite inexpensive.

The stairs in your average two story house are going to weigh about 3 times the amount of a spiral set of stairs that could be shipped in a cost effective way. Spiral stairs are not going to be the main stairway in a home and normally go up to a loft or an attic. Most spiral stairs don't meet the minimum building requirements for the main stairway in your home.

When building tract homes the lumber is shipped in bulk directly to the house site where it will be assembled. The lumber and other building materials will be shipped once. If it went to a factory and then assembled it would also have to be sent to the site on which the house was to be built. This added expense in shipping the materials twice is the problem for such a large and heavy item such as a set of stairs.

There are other prefabricated types of stairs that are built locally and the shipping usually is not a major expense. If you are building a stairway that is not to difficult to build for the average carpenter it will normally be cost effective to build the stairs on site. This would require having the carpenter build the stairs as part of the rough framing and then after drywall have the finish carpenter build the stair handrail system.

Bathroom Improvements

Bathroom improvements offer a dramatic return on the investment, especially when they are handled as do-it-yourself projects. Bathroom improvements are important, as this is the place where family members spend time relaxing.

Modern bathrooms are at their best havens of tranquility and a great selling point for a homely home. At their worst, bathrooms can be an eyesore and decrease the value of a home. Modern bathroom cabinets and other furniture is a far cry from the products that was fitted as standard just a few short years ago when it was usual to see peeling paint and mirror backing disintegrating.

Especially large families that have several people sharing the same bathroom, making minor bathroom improvements can make it easier and more private. When several people are forced to share the same space, things are going to be misplaced or put away where the owner may never find them.

Bathroom improvements are popular and bring the high return when a house is sold. Rather than undertaking major improvements like installing a new tub, try some easy affordable ideas like replacing old door hardware and bath accessories to make it look appealing. By fitting a new bathroom cabinet perhaps with subtle lighting, or a freestanding cabinet, the bathroom area can be transformed, which can be made in wood finishes as well as traditional white. A mirror with small, charming lights adds a warm feeling to your bathroom.

Colored lotion bottles and bubble baths are practical and can be attractive when organized properly. Ornamental soaps are nice but hardly ever used; instead you should find eye-catching bottles and refill them with liquid soap.

Baths should not only look good, they need to make you feel good as well. Many new items found in today's bathrooms not only make your day-to-day living more enjoyable, but can also be energy efficient improvement. Bathrooms have come a long way from the days of strictly no-frills design and use, and are now viewed as sanctuaries to which people escape and indulge in personal pampering.

Additional space is almost always needed for storage in a bathroom. This can allow all of your family to have their own little space for their toiletries.

Paint can give you the biggest decorating bang for your budget buck. Paint is relatively inexpensive, and can really change the overall look of a room.

Nevertheless adding a second bath can make your home considerably easier to sell. Other fundamental improvements also include installing double sinks, tile floors, new bath fixtures and taps. All these improvements should add value to your home. A good do it yourself home improvement project will raise the value of your property and collateral, in the eyes of a lender. Because of this, lenders are more than willing to offer homeowners funds.

Install Roof Shingles - Home Tips

If you're serious about learning how to install roof shingles, you've come to the right place. But first let me tell you about a job I was on many years ago in Cape Coral, Florida...

It was a brand new house with a shingle roof. It also had a complicated roof design and six valleys. The builder went a little too far cost-cutting and hired a couple of day-laborers to shingle the house. He had paid them just $10 per square for 30 squares, a total of $300. All was fine and dandy until the first rain... when all six valleys leaked!

Of course the day laborers were long gone by then, which is just as well according to Einstein. He said that some problems can't be solved with the same mentality which created them in the first place! This was one of those problems.

That's when the builder called the small, but reputable roofing company I worked for.

The valley errors were all pretty obvious... and typical of the ones that rookies and poorly-trained roofers make. I will say this for them... they were consistent. All six valleys had exactly the same problems. And all six had to be completely re-laid, costing the builder more much more than he paid for the entire roof.

One of your biggest challenges when roofing your own home is the valleys. After repairing hundreds of them over the years, I see the same mistakes over and over. Here are the three most common problems... and how to avoid them!

How to Install Roof Shingles - Valley Tip #1

Valleys fill up with water during a big shower and some water ends up under the shingles. If the shingle nails are too close to the center of the valley, you can get a leak. That nail pattern you see on the shingle wrappers doesn't apply to the valleys. Keep your nails at least 12" away from the center of the valley.

How to Install Roof Shingles - Valley Tip #2

Shingle seams can also leak when they fall right in the valley. Keep the seams at least 12" away from the center of the valley by adjusting the length of the adjacent shingles on both sides.

How to Install Roof Shingles - Valley Tip #3

When cutting the top layer of shingles in a "half-weave" valley, many roofers cut into the bottom layer. Over the years, those cuts can open up, causing leaks. Make the cut carefully with some old tin snips, or use a hook blade and a scrap shingle to protect the bottom layer.

Of course there's a lot more involved in learning how to install roof shingles. To make the job easier and help you avoid big mistakes, go to: http://www.roofingsecrets.com
